I've been trying to get a local cycling list going, and had picked up some business cards when Vistaprint was running a special, but it occurred to me that I see more bikes parked than out on the streets. They're obviously daily riders in many cases, so good potential users for the list, but I couldn't think of a good way to leave a card on a typical bike without tape or something similar. Wedging a card into whatever crack is available didn't appeal to me either, sinc if it gets wet the part that's wedged in will tear off and be hard to clean out later.
I ran across some door hangers from an old job that gave me an idea. Use a hole punch to make a hole in an empty spot on the card and then scissors to cut from an edge to the hole. Then you can hang the card on a brake or derailleur cable with no tape, glue or other things that I wouldn't like to find stuck to my bike. If it gets soaking wet and starts to fall apart, it'll just fall off, leaving the bike without some gooey bit of paper stuck in a crack.

Looks good, I carry a supply of business cards for the LBS that I go to most often. And if I end up talking to someone who indicates that they are in the market for a bike I give them one.

Part of the issue here is the 30 mile drive to the nearest bike shop. Getting more people on the list means a better chance of finding somebody who'll be going by there soon.

Fortunately, there are quite a few people who travel right past that bike shop or one at about the same distance in another direction at least weekly for work. The trick is coordinating with them. I'm also hoping to use it as a way to coordinate when the "downtown district" improvements start getting into specifics so we can go push for good quality bike parking and possibly some drinking fountains and sharrows on the best routes into downtown.

Have you contacted the owners of those shops? When the city starts to improve things having them on board will help.
I would suggest that you insist that those fountains dispense cold water. We have a LOT of water/drinking fountains in and around St. Pete that all they give out is hot water. That and they are few and far between. This includes the fountains along the Pinellas Trail.
There is at least one fountain that I know of that has cold water, and that is located on the bath house at North Shore Park/beach. There might be others, but I would be surprised.

Right now, part of the reason for the big downtown plans is the lack of good wandering-around-type retail in the downtown area. The square has a tattoo shop, a bar, an office supply store, travel agency and a Ben Franklin. The rest of it is lawyers' offices. There's not really anything to get most people to spend much time there except the bar.
I would suggest that you insist that those fountains dispense cold water. We have a LOT of water/drinking fountains in and around St. Pete that all they give out is hot water.
Not much of a problem here; even though our "frost line" is about 1/16", they still bury the pipes far enough down that you'll get naturally earth-cooled water within a few seconds. Last time I checked, in a 105 week, the water started out too hot to drink, hit 75F within 20 seconds, and kept getting cooler over the next minute or so.
