  • Being seen
    By:admin
I ride my bike every day of the week year round. I ride mostly in morning hours and most of the time in darkness.
I am continually amazed seeing other cyclists going down the street with no lights, and dark clothing. Even in broad daylight I see people dressed darkly so they blend in rather than stand out.
Call me a fuddy duddy but I do prefer to be seen rather than hurt. So....for visibility I wear a yellow rain jacket with reflective striping, a yellow helmet cover with same reflective stuff, and an orange reflective vest. I wear (nightime or daylight) a 6 led headlamp in strobe mode (it shines where I look) a planet bike beamer 5 strobe on my handlebar, a planet bike super blinkey on the rear of my helmet and another on my seatpost.

I have applied Solas reflective tape to my crank arms, fork, stem, seat and chain stays, half of each rim, and to each side of my helmet. Solas reflective tape is used by the U.S. Coast Guard...it is the most highly visible reflective tape on the market. Did I say I run these lights in both nighttime and daytime cycling. Well I just did. I use rechargeable batteries.
I have found the headlamp to be the most essential part of my lighting system.
It is not uncommon for approaching motorists wanting to make a left turn in my path to wait for me for as much as a half block in advance until I pass the intersection and I don't know how many times cars intersecting me to my right who I have the sneaking suspicion would have otherwise pulled out in front of me have stopped with my very bright headlamp in their faces.

I am convinced that motorist-cyclist accidents could be drastically reduced if cyclists became more visible to drivers.

I am convinced that motorist-cyclist accidents could be drastically reduced if cyclists became more visible to drivers. Nothing wrong with good lighting and reflective gear, particularly at night, but don't don't mistake that for what actually makes you safe. Safety gear is at best a tertiary response to the "dangers" of road riding. Your primary means of staying safe is by observing traffic signals and laws and maintaining your own awareness. As described, you are already adequately visible for any motorist unless they are drunk, drugged, texting or talking. In which case you could be 10 feet tall, wearing a lime green reflective bunny suit, and blasting "The Harder They Come" at full volume, and they still won't know you're there.

You forgot lightweights for wheels (stickers that use 3M's Scotchlite reflective material, applied to your spokes) and a photo of your bike(s) at night...

so lightweights are just stickers? Is there an advantage to buying those instead of a roll of 3M tape? Because this looks more fun:

and comes in different colours (omg green!)
do you have a picture of them in daylight? I'm wondering how they are applied.

I really like the idea of stickers on spokes.
