- Cyclist on path killed... woman driving SUV crashes through fence into adjacen
- By:admin
- Man I don't even know where to start on this one... apparently a woman driving an SUV lost control while changing lanes and went through a fence onto a bike path and killed one cyclist and injured another.

This is one of my favorite paths... well designed, wide, and fast, with freeway like ramps from the path to the cross streets. It is a virtual bike highway.
This path parallels a new freeway that was built where a well used arterial road once existed. When road was built into the freeway, the path was added as cyclists were restricted from the freeway. Below are pictures of the path, so you can see the proximity to the freeway.
The path is parallel to the freeway, but there is an 8 foot shoulder, plus about 8 feet of vegetation, and then a chain link fence... yet some motorist could not control their vehicle, plowed through the fence and managed to kill a cyclist.
Some cyclists say that bike lanes aren't safe... but with motorists like this, you aren't safe anywhere, not even on separated bike paths.

Do you know if any charges have been pressed against the driver of the SUV yet? My condolences to the families of the victims.

Do you know if any charges have been pressed against the driver of the SUV yet? My condolences to the families of the victims. Have not heard yet. I doubt any charges will be brought though, as no alcohol was involved... typically that means "it was just an accident."

I see local news report about 3-4x per year of motor vehicle driver loosing control and killing pedestrians on sidewalk.
Reasons for loss of control have included: Falling asleep, seizure, heart attack and intoxication.
Here is most recent: http://www.azcentral.com/community/s...ident0508.html

Have not heard yet. I doubt any charges will be brought though, as no alcohol was involved... typically that means "it was just an accident." Did she have a cell phone in the car with her? She could have been on it or texting. What I'd like to know is what she was doing that she wasn't able to concentrate on her driving. As one would have to think that she was doing something other than concentrating on her driving.
Even if she was doing "everything right" and her SUV suffered some mechanical problem isn't her responsibility to make sure that her car is safe to use?

the driver "overcorrected" and lost control of the vehicle...the skids marks indicate the SUV was partailly sideways as it left the freeway

...but we all know that none of that counts when you kill a cyclist or pedestrian.
