Here in Utah, Bicycle Racing in public streets is illegal, as hot rodding in a car is.
I learned last night, while Hot Rodding around on my bike, racing cars, and other moped things, that my riding habits were illegal and also putting me in harms way.
I learned I must be on my toes and watchful as I can be, riding safely as I can.
Or I am risking my own well being, and putting the public image of bicycling in bad view.

I hope I am not out of place by posting my observation.

Have any cyclists been charged with racing?

If you're not racing another cyclist, what's the different between "racing" and just "going quickly"?

A sport race is a competition of speed, against an objective criterion, usually a clock or to a specific point. The competitors in a race try to complete a given task in the shortest amount of time. Typically this involves traversing some distance, but it can be any other task involving speed to reach a specific goal.

In my case I was racing two Mopeds.
I have also raced against traffic, I am NOT talking about just going fast.

It seems like it might be hard to prove the intent to race. I'd be interested to know if anyone was charged.

More importantly, did you beat the mopeds or what?

Scofflaw. You should be arrested and locked up. You no doubt broke the speed limit, too.

Look on the bright side, at least in Utah, the Police understand that a bicycle can go too fast. It kind of breaks down the stereotypical attitude that bicycles always go "too slow".

I want a smaller car that I can modify to STS2 class, which is still street legal (STS2 definition includes passing emissions and falling within all operational laws on public roads) but has major suspension upgrades so it handles far better in emergency situations. Cars upgraded to SCCA Solo STS and STS2 class are safer: they are much less likely to skid, slide, or roll over; although they have little acceleration advantage, as the only STS/STS2 upgrades allowed in the power train are a high-flow air filter, high-flow catalytic converter, and high-flow exhaust, provided the upgrades are legal (not too much noise, must pass emissions). This at best get you smoother acceleration and a better power curve, but won't give you a 50HP boost or anything.

    What is "hot rodding" anyway?

So if you tweet something like "I set a personal record getting from my house to the office today" you're in violation because you are time trialing?

So if you tweet something like "I set a personal record getting from my house to the office today" you're in violation because you are time trialing? Yes, and these are laws that you should ignore.

    Sometimes the law is wrong.

Yes, and these are laws that you should ignore. Wrong.

Sometimes the law is wrong. True, there are plenty of laws on the books that for whatever reason are no longer enforceable. That however does NOT mean that we have the "right" to ignore them. When one comes across such a law one needs to work within the system to get it changed or repealed.
