- loose or damaged skewer?
- By:admin
- I just took the front wheel off the mountain bike I commute on to replace a tube that had a slow leak. While I had the wheel off it fell over rather hard on the skewer. After putting the wheel back on, there now seems to be a little play in the front tire. If I apply the front brake hard enough to lock the front wheel and push forward on the bike I can feel a pop and the brake cable moves slightly but the wheel is not moving. I think it is the skewer moving around or flexing...maybe it was damaged when it fell over? Another symptom since reinstalling the wheel is that the front breaks squeal pretty badly whereas before they didn't. Anybody have any ideas? I took the wheel back off and the skewer mechanism feels loose to me but I can't find anything to tighten and I don't have another to compare it to. It's an enclosed cam skewer by the way. I'm a bit of a rookie when it comes to repair so any help is much appreciated.

The opposite end of the skewer from the lever is a nut, which you can tighten with your fingers when the lever is released. Before you tighten it, unscrew the nut completely. You can then pull the skewer out and see if it is bent. If it is bent a bit you can still use it for a while, but go to a shop and get a new one as soon as convenient.

Ixnay on the skewer being faulty. I took the wheel off and was able to recreate the popping feeling in the frame. I think I have isolated it to where the steerer enters the head tube at the headset . There is a small but perceptible movement between the headset and the head tube when flexing the bike forward on a fully braked front wheel. Ther wasn't an obvious way to disassemble this on my bike (only one screw on top end of the steerer, above the stem) so I think I'll just run it down to the LBS tomorrow. Thanks for your help AndrewP.
