  • Rear Derailleur Skipping Problem
    By:admin
I have new 6 speed bike and there is some shifting problem in the rear derailleur. The chain is not shifting from the 6th gear(sprocket) to 5th(sprocket) when I change the gear from 6 to 5.When I change 4th to 5th gear, the chain directly go to the 6th gear(sprocket), skipiing 5th gear(sprocket). what can be the problem? Can any one help

Can any one help Sounds like the derailleur is a bit off: your derailleur is "too eager" to shift to a bigger sprocket, and "lazy" when going to the smaller sprocket. That means you need to slacken the derailleur cable a bit to readjust the indexing. To do that, look at the rear shifter on your handlebar, where the derailleur cable exits the shifter, you should see a small barrel adjuster: screw it in 1 or 2 notches and try out your bike again. If it's still doing what you describe, try screwing it in 1 or 2 notches more until the indexing it just right. If you overdo it, simply screw it back out until you find the ideal setting.

If your bike doesn't respond to adjusting the shift cable tension, then my bet is that your derailleur hanger is a tiny bit out of alignment. The derailleur arm has to be exactly parallel with the main frame tubes. You will probably not be able to "eyeball" it into alignment. Shops have a gauge for aligning derailleur hangers.

    Thanks ppc and Retro

@ppc- I am using Shimano Rivo Shift and i could not find any barrel adjuster near the shifter, but have one near rear derailleur. Adjusted the rear barrel adjuster and the problem became less severe. I think the gear cable is very loose.

but have one near rear derailleur. Adjusted the rear barrel adjuster and the problem became less severe. I think the gear cable is very loose. Be careful not to overdo the tightening or loosening, of you might offset the indexing by one sprocket (i.e. it works but you can't go to the biggest or the smallest sprocket anymore). Check that you can hit all the sprockets after you're happy with your adjustments.
