I need to go out and run some errands, but first fix my flat. I'm all out of patches, and my old tube already has three on there, so its time for a new tube. The only one thaty I have though is a 700x28-35. Do you think that I'd be ruining a perfectly good tube by trying this out under a 23C tire?

I've used skinny tubes with fatter tyres, but never the other way around. I'd be afraid of the tube getting itself into a twist or fold, and causing a lump or uneven spot in the tyre, causing the wheel to be out of balance, or uneven wear on the tyre, or even a puncture. It might be OK for just a short time?br />

I've done this. The one problem I had was that the tire was quite a bit more difficult to get on the rim. I used my tubes from a 27x1 1/4 tires when I switched to 27x1 tires and they were rough to get on. I bought 27x1 tubes (significantly narrower) and the tire went on fine. You also run the danger of pinched tubes.

Too-big tubes should really just be used in an emergency. It's awfully hard to get them in there without folding over on themselves. Sooner than later, this fold will create a hole, and we all know how awesome holes in tubes are ...
I once fit a 2.25" tube into a 1.5" tire as an emergency "get home before dark" deal. It took two of us to get the tire back on the rim, and there was so much tube stuffed in there that we barely had to inflate it. Did the trick, but definitely not a long-term solution.
You'll probably be fine while you're running errands. Change it out soon, though.

Don't worry about 3 patches on one tube. I currently am riding on one with 7 patches, including one on the valve stem [schrader tube] that I put a patch on, and drilled out the valve hole in the rim a bit to accomadate the larger valve. I think that bike has a flat now. Patch No. 8, here I come!

Yeah, I'd agree. I just got rid of one that I had 9 patches on. I had to get rid of it because a bad rim strip caused a puncture in one of the patches, and I couldn't get it off to put a new patch there, so I just tossed it. At $5.00/tube, I patch 'em 'til I can't patch 'em anymore.
