  • dura ace headset issues.
    By:admin
so, one of my frames came with a lovely oldschool dura ace headset. the headset has a little plastic ring that protects the precious cartridge bearings. some mother ******** as*hole locked next to me last night and broke this ring. now i'm riding around with my bearings showing... how uncouth.

anyway, i checked and you can't get just the plastic ring. i refuse to believe i need a new headset just because this POS plastic piece broke. does anyone know where i could just get that little ring? or any DIY solutions to keep the bearings a little cleaner and happier?

    many thanks...

I'd wrap piece of an innertube around the cup. Put a little grease under the tube to seal it (and to keep the friction from hindering your no-hands riding) and you'll be good to go.

I think Lizard Skins also makes an external headset seal but I've always used the DIY inner tube section method myself.

The old school bearing seal was a piece of pipe cleaner (any one else remember those?) wrapped around the bearing edges to keep out crud. I don't know if you can even find them anymore.
