The bike is twentieth century or something close.
Sorry, I am sure someone will be by with a serious answer soon, but in advance, I will say.... Pictures are always helpful.
Also, look at vintage-trek.com for information on component date codes that can also help identify approximate build dates if they are orginal components. vintage-trek's page on date codes for components is useful for all makes...

T-Mar knows the Univega serial numbers.

Thanks for the replies, I think I have a clue to what it is. My guess is a Univega Gran Rally circa 1981 or 1982. If T-Mar can confirm, that would be great. The frame has been powdercoated and most of the components have been removed or replaced. but from the Shimano components left show a manufacture date of Mar 1981
