That's cherry! It looks like it was shrink wrapped. The generator light takes me back to my first 10-spd as a teenager.

It's beautiful, leave it exactly as it is.
BTW, the Schwinn bashers need to take a good look at this bike. Back in the day Schwinn made durable and beautifully finished bicycles. That's why they sold millions of them.
