  • Rare vintage gitane.
    By:admin
It was called the "france sport de luxe".
I looked for old gitane frames but could find nothing.
It didn't look like a normal frame, very cool.
It looked to be from the 60s or so, and was a light green/blue, probably horribly faded.
I might be the one that got away, I could have gotten it for free, please let me know soon if you know anything about it.

More likely the Gran Sport De Luxe. Not that rare, there are more out there, but free is a great price.

    Here are the catalogues:

Gitane made a "Grand Sport Deluxe". Are you sure that's not what you saw...?? They also had several lower models that included "......Deluxe", some of them were mixtes. Nice bikes often w/ Normandy hubs. You should be able to find another for roughly $20-50 at a thrift store or rummage

It was the center one, looked a lot like France but it's take you word for it.
glad it wasn't some one of a kind.

I've never seen a Gitane mixte or even a picture of one outside of the catalog. I'd have grabbed it, but I like mixtes.

My wife's first "good" bike was a Gitane mixte. She put a lot of miles on it over the years. After I built her a custom frame, another mixte, we put fenders, lights and tougher tires on the Gitane and she continued to use it around town.

My mother and my sister both had 1970 Gitane Mixtes. Gorgeous bikes they were, too. My mom still has hers, complete with bent top tubes from a head-on collision when she loaned it out,** and my sister's was stolen from her back yard.

** I think about repairing them when I finish my other projects. I'm also itching to get my father's Gran Sport de Luxe, which is in the attic with my mother's mixte.

glad it wasn't some one of a kind. It was made in France (Gitane means "gypsy.") It may be that there were words to that effect-- "Made in France"-- somewhere on the bike.

Definitely not one of a kind, and not even the top of the line. As Dirtdrop and others here can tell you, the sought-after Gitanes are the Tour de France, and the top of the line, the Super Corsa. The Gran Sport de Luxe is near the bottom of the line. Nice bikes still, and as I said above, I plan on snagging my dad's Gran Sport as soon as I can. Won't stop me from wanting a Tour de France or Super Corsa, though, but who says I can only have one?
