My truck died the weekend after Christmas of 2003. I'd been an off and on bike commuter before that, but not full-time because some days I just didn't feel like riding to work (I run and lift too and some days, I'm just whooped).
I discussed it with my wife and we've decided to see how well we fare with only her van to transport us and the kids. So far, things have been great. I've driven to work a couple of times, but with good reason. Once was to return some parts for my truck and there's no way I could have carried them on the bike (within reason).
So this marks the one month anniversary that I've been truck free. I figure if I can tough out the winter in Atlanta, then the rest of the year should be cake.

I was in that situation once, too. I learned how to combine mass transit with riding (I got "whooped" from the distance, so that's what I came up with.) Today, I'm pretty close to being able to ride almost every day without using mass transit or car, but not quite. For me, the distance is probably less than yours, but it's still a lot for me--150 miles per week. I found that when I slowed down the pace, I could ride every day without rest days. By Friday, I was pretty beat, though!

I have almost exactly the same situation.
I ride to work a lot anyway, but since October I've done it ALL the time,
except three or four occasions when the night's rain froze, or it was already raining big-time.
Now, I've forced myself into riding at times I might not have otherwise, and am better off for it.
The other day, I had the family minivan out, and stopped to get fuel. I'd forgotten how damned
expensive the stuff is, and realized it had been weeks since I'd had to "go get gas".
This is a way of life I used to admire in others for years...

I admire you guys/gals for doing this. I live 20ish miles from work, but I plan to drive in and ride the rest. I work in a automotive shop and I need rest days during the week (mainly the heat in the summer). Im gonna start with riding 2 days and go from there.

Congrats on the anniversary! I've been car free for a few months and I feel really good about my decision. And yeah, if we can make it in winter we can make it anytime. I find myself looking forward to the snow, it's almost like saying," go ahead, do your worst, I can do this!"

We losty a car in a July storm. I told my wife that I didn't want to replace it, but she insisted that we have a second car for transporting the kids. The only way that I could refrain from not driving in below zero weather, is if there is no car sitting in the driveway. If we lived in warmer climes, I would have fought her tooth and nail.
