I feel awful. I just heard from a friend that he saw a woman who was run over by a truck on her bike. I won't divulge any more details than that, because I feel too terrible as it is.
Please, please be careful everyone. Make sure large vehicles can see you, and if you're not sure, just hit those brakes and let them go by first. It's not a competition against drivers, it's your life, and you need to get where you're going safely.
I don't know the details of the accident, who did what, or anything like that, but please watch your backs.

at least tell us the type of collision? right hook, left hook, driveway, overtaking, what?

This is EXACTLY why I hate riding on public roads and such....you can NEVER see everything in all directions. I just can't stand when I have to be on a road for anything.
Trails only if I can!!!
Last year I got to take vacation in England and saw cyclist weaving in and out of traffic EVERYWHERE in London.......I can't believe they aren't having accidents like that ever "hour". It's bumper to bumper traffic with cyclist that seemed to have NO regard for safety or respect for larger vehicles.

It's not because we are voyeurs, but the more info we can find out, the more helpful this post will be. I am on these streets every day and I am feeling a bit sick. please find out whatever you can about the accident - it may help someone else. thanks.

Like I said, I don't know the details of the accident. I'll call my friend and ask him if he knows anything. I looked on NY1, and didn't see anything there yet.

Ahhh... that's why you have to ride vehicularly, so that you are far enough away from the Line of Death (the curb line) to SEE and BE SEEN.
FWIW, I've had many more close-calls in this city as a pedestrian than as a vehicular cyclist.

I know...and do ride with vehicles if I can.....but even on small residential roads, I'm often riding down only to have a car pull out of their driveway without looking or something of that nature. I'm just ultra paranoid about it I guess. Plus, I hate riding on roads because you are sucking exhaust fumes too often. :yuck:

Does anyone know where this occured? A friend of mine was checking up on me after he saw an ambulance pull a cyclist away after a what he called a very nasty crash in Brooklyn. He arrived too late to be able to learn more about the accident.
I wonder if these are the two same events.
This is a sad time for cyclists in the city... this is the second death in as many months.

That officially freaks me out a little. I work down the block from 5th and will start bike commuting to this new job next week. Yikes!
I get so sick to my stomach when I think about situations like this, too, but not because of myself. I think of the poor victim doing Something Good by riding a bike rather than using fossils fuels, and getting killed for thanks. The decision to take out the bike today for today's victim is sadly irreversible.
