I've been involved with mountain biking for a while and now I want to get into road biking. I'm fixing up an older schwinn bike to use as a starter bike. The tires that are currently on the bike are 27" tires. Will 700 mm tires fit on these wheels? If not, where can I find 27" tires?
Thanks in advance,
Draft
Also, the width is 1-1/4". Is this a problem?

700mm is 27.559 inches so I don't think the tires would fit. My LBS has 27x1 1/4 tires.
Good luck with it.

Thanks for all of your help. After a bit of searching, I found a pair. I couldn't find an inexpensive kevlar bead, but the wire should be fine for now.
Thanks again,

700C wheels are not 700mm. they are actually 622. 27"ers are 630mm. so no, they are not cross compatible.

Which brings up a question. If they are 622mm why do they call them 700s? No, don't tell me. This will give me something to mull over in my mind as I attack the OHMIGAWD hills on Chesterfield Road in Crofton.

Is this related to why a 2x4 is not 2" x 4"?

Exactly. It is also like when I was in the Navy, we always "scrubbed up" and "washed down." Never could figure out why, and the Captain thought I was just being argumentative! Me!

Why do we mount a saddle on a seat post and put it in a seat tube? Shouldn't it be a saddle tube or should we be sitting on a seat?

Ahh MAKE SURE THEY AREN"T SCHWINN 27", I think they are marked like S6 if they are. We have a customer with the first Schwinn sized 27's we have seen and cannot get tires from any source.

I'm running $5.99 Kenda 27X1 1/4 blackwalls from the local hardware store. OK, but only take 70psi. I then found some 1 1/8 tires at the local Fleet Farm (Midwest farm/home store) for $4.99 that take 90psi. I didn't want to invest much just trying out my beater SS project. Since it seems like a good bike, I'd like to go to better tires now.
I'd really like to run as narrow as possible, and the highest pressure available. I will check out the Nashbar sale Zoridog mentioned. I wonder if I can run 1" tires on my 1 1/4 rims? I think I can...

1" tires may work but I gave up trying to put a pair of Michelin 7/8" x 27" folding kevlar tires on several 27" different wheels. My last attempt was on a very narrow rigida rim & was my record for longevity, took 3 days to blow off the rim. Fortunately, it happened over night & the bike was leaning against my workbench when detonation occured. 3 brand new tubes down the drain, boo hoo. Don
