  • Building a bike that can climb: what抯 your setup?
    By:admin
I got a bike for the flats卋ut I want to make a pure climber?Have any ideas like this one I saw on slowtwitch.com:

揂cquired a SRAM 11-32 mountain bike cassette, designated PG990, for one of my road bikes that I'm setting up strictly as a climber. I've ordered a Shimano XTR rear derailleur for this bike, which shares the same indexing as Shimano's road derailleurs and for which I'll use a Dura Ace STI shifter. The XTR's longer cage is needed to accommodate the wide range of cassette cogs.?br />
Has any one tried that? A mechanic I know said it would work but the shifting would drag a bit?True?

Building a bike that can climb: what抯 your setup? The setup works fine, but unless you are some kind of weakling, a 11x32 cassette isn't a hot 'climbing' setup. Sounds like you ned to train harder and oink down more spinach and wheaties.....FWIW, the writer of that blurb is a moron, as the XTR doesn't share indexing, but rather a common throw ratio, and you don't need a long cage to shift a 32,but you do need a RD with the correct parallelogram geometry. The xtr also comes in a short cage, that will shift a 32 or 34. And, rather than try and deal with the wide ratio jumps on a cassette like that one would be better off with a compact double crank and a 34 small ring or a triple if one was a a real weenie....People sometimes go with a setup like that for a one ride climb like Mt. Washington, rather than changing out a whole drivetrain. In many cases, an ultegra 9 speed RD will shft a 32.

I too would agree that unless you are climbing some insane hills daily you don't need a 32. Id start doing some squats and run a 12/25 or something close to that.

    happy climbing

happy climbing Cross train.....weights, stair steeper, running. All these different activities will have over-lapping benefits and train you from a different perspective. This is where I disagree with a lot of forum members who just say ride the bike more often.

I'm not a billy goat at riding, and am just a recreational cyclist. I have a sport/touring bike with 48/38/28 chainrings, and put a 7 speed 14-32 cassette on the back. It's nice for spinning up steeper hills with my bad knees.

THat would actually be a good set-up for this upcoming Marklesville Death Ride.
